The Mango Balloon – The Mango Balloon Volume 2

Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week is The Mango Balloon Volume 2 by The Mango Balloon.

Julian Curwin is a man of many projects. Head honcho of his own record label Romero Records the leader of The Tango Saloon and member of Darth Vegas, his latest album The Mango Balloon Volume 2 is a release under the guise of his third outfit The Mango Balloon.

Essentially a stripped back version of The Tango Saloon, The Mango Balloon features six members from the group plus guest vocals from Brian Campeau, who has recently been touring as one half of The Rescue Ships.

The sound as such is a more laid back acoustic take on their unique jazz, tango and country western style. The elements of the larger band have been purified and distilled into a lighter form creating a vivid and beguiling affair whilst maintaining their familiar quirkiness and cabaret. It’s in the subtlety of their play where the success of the album lies and furthermore adds to the mysticism that seems to inevitably surround Julian’s offerings.

One must also pay tribute to the actual name of the band itself – it’s truly brilliant. Their light hearted yet unusual take on jazz offers an experience that would quite truly be encapsulated by a gently bobbing mango shaped balloon breezing you to an unknown and mysterious utopia. All in all a quite carefree and totally infectious adventure.

The Mango Balloon Volume 2 is a release by Romero Records. For more information go to romerorecords.com.au
