The Musical that is “fisting” its’ way to end all other musicals
On this week’s Something Else, I brought along Paige Leacey and Jake Nielsen to talk about their Broadway inspired musical comedy The Atheist’s Guide to the Galaxy,for Sydney’s Fringe Festival.
Rain and the irritable traffic of Sydney may have slowed the guests but it didn’t stop us talking about some pretty hilarious things on this week’s show.
The Atheist’s Guide to the Galaxy is comprised of a group of ‘Sydney-siders’ that have a poke at religion, sexuality and anything in between. Jake is a co-director and co-director that had the show’s premiere back in April this year. The show was such a success that its up for its second season at the Marrickville Sidetrack Theatre this weekend and next weekend.
The show follows a young boy named Michael who, from his newfound homosexuality, becomes an outcast of his church. He there is forced into an ‘Anti-Camp’ Camp where we are introduced by the bubbly and neurotic counsellor played by Paige. The script and score are entirely original and include numbers that shocked and delighted audiences the first time round, including Sodo-you if you sodomy, and a brand new song Armageddon Outta Here.
Yeah religion is a pretty sensitive subject, but who could take it all to seriously when it’s in a 4-piece quartet? No one. And neither do Paige nor Jake; it seems to be a friendly light-hearted show that exposes every religion for what it is – for better or worse. The comedy comes from a good place said Jake on the show, so its not meant to offend more entertain.
Don’t worry guys, you won’t be converted (that’s not the point), though you will be sex vocabulary will be definitely enhanced.
