The New Thing 04/06/12 Playlist & Albums

Here’s what albums were featured on The New Thing today and which tracks were played!

Guy Strazz Quartet – Eastern Blues

The latest release on Rufus Records is a cross cultural acoustic release from the Guy Strazz Quartet. Featuring Guy on acoustic and electric guitars, Aaron Flower on electric guitar, Hugh Fraser on acoustic bass and Toby Hall on drums, the album features beautiful guitar jazz with tinges of flamenco, eastern European and Indian influences.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Eastern Blues’

‘Spaced Out’

‘The Night Of The Long Thumbs’

‘Unquity Road’

A Track From Eastside Radio’s Album Of The Week

‘puzzle’ by motion from the album The Drowned World.

Samuel Yirga – Guzo

The debut release from the Ethiopian jazz pianist Samuel Yirga is a fantastic blend of Ethio Jazz, and afro funk, soul and brass bands. You can catch Samuel this Saturday at Bluebeat from 5.30pm!

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Abet Abet’ (Punt Mix)

‘My Head’

‘The Blues Of Wollo’ (Dessye Mix)

Malawi Mouse Boys – He Is #1

The African influence on today’s show continued with this Afro roots/blues/gospel release. Named after the kebabed rodents they sell as snacks, the group use homemade instruments and recycled guitars to create their simple but delightful sound.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Ndinasangalala’

‘Palibe’

‘Mtzitikali’

‘Jesu’

Independent Track Of The Week

‘Of Letters Lost’ by Sydney band Liam Gale & The Ponytails from their recently released EP Towers Of Time.

Giles Robson & The Dirty Aces – Crooked Heart Of Mine

Hailed by Sugar Blue and Paul Jones, Giles Robson’s harmonica skills are wild and exciting on his release with The Dirty Aces. Although the harmonica skills steal the show, his gritty voice also shines on this heavy smoky blues album released on Blues Boulevard label.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Solidor’

‘Devil Led Evil’

‘Some Kinda King’

‘Crooked Heart Of Mine’

And today’s final track of the week was from Miriam Lieberman, who is performing for Eastside at Live at 505 next Thursday night! The track was ‘Monsoon Rain’

Be sure to tune in every Monday from 9.00 til 10.30am for your weekly dose of fresh new music!
