The New Thing 05/11/12 Playlist & Albums

Here’s what albums were featured on The New Thing today and which tracks were played!

Menagerie – They Shall Inherit

A new album from a new group lead by prolific producer Lance Ferguson. Melbourne’s Menagerie are set to drop their debut album on December the 10th on Tru Thoughts, and it’s a bit of a corker. Lance moves towards a more jazz inspired sound that dabbles in funk with a 70’s twang. Featuring legendary vibraphonist Roy Ayers as well, The Shall Inherit oozes groove.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘There Will Come Soft Rains’

‘The Quietening’

‘The Chosen’

A Track From Eastside Radio’s Album Of The Week

‘Orla’ by the Mace Francis New York Nonet from the album Land Speed Record.

The Mango Balloon – The Mango Balloon Volume 2

Julian Curwin is a man of many projects, and under the guise of The Mango Balloon he has released his latest album – The Mango Balloon Volume 2. Essentially a stripped back version of The Tango Saloon, the sound is a more laid back acoustic take on Jazz, Tango and Country/Western music. Unique and entertaining, there are also feature vocals from Brian Campeau.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Sleepwalker’

‘Bubble Boy’

‘Grindhouse’

‘Dancing On My Own Grave’

Kooii – Call Out

Brisbane’s Kooii return with their totally infectious vibes on their new EP which was launched at Blue Beat last month. Bringing back their rhythm driven funk, reggae and afrobeat vibes, their sound is as original, energetic and uplifting as ever.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘People Want To Sing’

‘Kick It’

‘Hold It Up’

Independent Track Of The Week

‘Summer Storm’ by Fox + Sui from their debut EP Taboo.

Invisible System – Introducing Invisible System

Crackerjack release here, Dan Harper AKA Invisible System is a man who dabbles in dub, funk, trip hop, reggae, and electronica ALL with an Ethiopian edge. Oh Yes. A former aid worker in the country, whilst there he built his own studio and persuaded many of the country’s finest musicians to work with him including Samuel Yirga and Mahmoud Ahmed. This is actually the third album from the man himself, and it’s undoubtedly one for the open minded out there.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Closer To The Edge’

‘Oumabetty’

‘Skunk Funk’

‘Hode Baba (I’m Worried He’s Moving)’
