Dave Jackson Quartet – Cosmontology
A slice of independent Sydney Jazz here, late last year Dave Jackson was awarded the ‘Skills and Development’ grant to study with some of the worlds’ best musicians in Boston and New York. He has now released his debut album under his own name where he has also teamed up with Sean Wayland, Orlando Le Fleming and Greg Hutchinson. The album is jazz music that focuses on melodic development, with Mike Nock quoted as saying ‘It’s another step up for Australian Jazz.’

The Hot 8 Brass Band – The Life & Times Of The Hot 8 Brass Band
Another crackerjack release here on Tru Thoughts, The Hot 8 Brass Band are a New Orleans big brass band collective who serve up smoking hot jazz funk which crosses over into soul and hip hop. This, their second album, is raw and ready with some hard hitting tracks including ‘Can’t Hide From The Truth’ which castigates the local police for the killing of a band member a couple of years back.

Gary Clark Jr – Blak & Blu
A whole heap of hype surrounding this release at the moment. Gary Clark Jr has been likened to some of the kings of Rock n’ Roll, and his latest album sees him delve into blues, RnB, soul and garage rock. Look out for the blues tracks in particular, as Gary Clark Jr wows you with his verve and showmanship.

Various Artists – The Soul Of Melbourne
Quite a compilation album this one!! Featuring a whole array of the mad soul funk talent down in Melbourne at the moment, including the likes of Clairy Browne & The Bangin’ Rackettes, Chet Faker, The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra and Electric Empire to name a few, the album showcases and encompasses the exploding scene down there at the moment. A perfect summer party album!
