The New Thing 19/03/12 Playlist & Albums

Here’s what albums were featured on The New Thing today and which tracks were played!

Jens Thomas & Verneri Pohjola – Speed of Grace: A Tribute to AC/DC

Jens Thomas is often referred to as a bit of a jazz piano Jimi Hendrix, and his latest release is certainly an unusual one. Never has AC/DC sounded so fragile and at times haunting, yet somehow strangley Jen’s slow whispered crooning and his subtle piano riffs combined with Verneri’s trumpet solos make this album strangley beautiful. Did you ever think you’d here AC/DC in a jazz improv style??

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘The Jack’

‘T.N.T’

‘If You Want Blood’

Chiri – The Return Of Spring

Chiri are Simon Barker on drums, Scott Tinkler on trumpet and Bae Il Dong on vocals. The three in The Return Of Spring have created a quite remarkable fusion album, as Bae Il Dong sings in the traditional p’ansori style over Scott and Simon’s jazz improvisations. East meets West, old meets new, this is a totally individual release for those who like to delve deeper into jazz music.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Kaching’

‘The View To Gangneun’

‘Chunhyang’s Love Song’

‘Bandwagon’

A Track From Eastside Radio’s Album Of The Week

‘Ms Coconutz’ by Slide Albatross from the album Slide Albatross.

Kim Sinh & Dom Turner – Two Days In Hanoi

A truly fantastic release this one. Kim Sinh, a Vietnamese musical idol and Dom Turner of Sydney blues band Backsliders teamed up for two days back in 2008 and came out with this gem. Only recently released, the Vietnamese Cai Luong style is fused beautifully with Dom’s smoky blues guitar. A must have.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Hanoi Horses’

‘Vong Co (The Necklace)’

‘King Lei Loi’s Sword’

‘Antiehero’

Independent Track Of The Week

‘Cold River Blues’ by Adelaide band The Hushes from their debut album Cold River Blues.

Ruthie Foster – Let It Burn

The new album from the New Orleans gospel blues powerhouse singer Ruthie Foster consists mostly of covers, with a couple of originals also thrown in. Ruthie’s voice shines throughout.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘The Titanic’

‘Lord Remember Me’

‘You Don’t Miss Your Water’

‘Truth! (New Orleans Studio Funk Version)’

Be sure to tune in every Monday from 9.00 til 10.30am for your weekly dose of fresh new music!
