Susan Gai Dowling with Carl Dewhurst & The Canberra Connection  – In Summer

Eastside’s very own Susan Gai Dowling has a new album perfect for the upcoming sunny months. Featuring Carl Dewhurst on guitar, Cameron Undy on double bass, Greg Royal on double bass and James Hauptmann on drums, In Summer is a collection of light interpretations which Susan describes as ‘poetry set to music’.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Blue Prelude’

‘Alberta’

‘Be At Peace’

A Track From Eastside Radio’s Album Of The Week

‘Cosmontology’ by the Dave Jackson Quartet from his album Cosmontology.

Iiro Rantala – My History of Jazz

Finnish pianist Iiro Rantala has teamed up with bassist Lars Danielsson and drummer Morten Lund on this latest release on ACT. Expressing Iiro’s view on the evolution of jazz, My History of Jazz features interpretations of Gershwin, Bach, Kurt Weill, Duke Ellington and Thelonius Monk to name a few, plus a few originals from Iiro himself. A beautifully intelligent and stunningly executed album.

Katie Noonan & Karin Schaupp – Songs Of The Southern Skies

Recently ARIA nominated for best independent release, Songs Of The Southern Skies sees two of Australia’s most talented artists team up to create an incredibly delicate and tender album. Featuring their interpretations of some of Australia’s and New Zealand’s most renowned classical, folk, jazz and pop songs, the album is all about the musical ability of these two exquisite talents as Katie’s vocals and Karin’s guitar are enough to bedazzle the senses.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Rainbow Cake’

‘Southern Cross Dreaming’

‘Emperor’s Box’

Independent Track Of The Week

‘The Window’ by StormChasers.

The Townhouses – Diaspora

A great release this one on the fantastic small independent label Yes Please. The Townhouses is the alter ego of Melbourne artist Leigh Hannah, and Diaspora sees him show off his folktronic, ethereal and worldly kaleidoscope of sound. Featuring other great up and coming electronic artists like Guerre, Rainbow Chan and Wintercoats, you can also catch The Townhouses this Thursday at York Street Anglican as part of The Gate’s Sound/Light/Stone series.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Talk’ (Feat. Giorgio Tuma)

‘Melquidas’

‘Schoenberg’ (Feat. Rainbow Chan)

‘Our Trees Will Grow’
