The New Thing 26/12/11 Track List & Albums

Here’s what albums were featured on The New Thing today and which tracks were played!

Jan Johansson with Georg Riedl – In Hamburg

Jan Johansson was the leading Swedish jazz pianist of his generation in the 1950s and 60s until a car crash abruptly ended his life at the tender age of 37 in 1968. These recordings were made in the last four years of his life and have just been released on the superb ACT label. Fantastic to have a memory of one of the all but forgotten jazz stars of the past.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Yesterdays’

‘Har Kommer Pippi Langstrump’

‘Fem’

‘3,2,1, – Go!’

Allan Browne – Collected Works Volume Two: Fifty Years Of New Orleans Jazz

Allan Browne has been at the forefront of the Australian jazz scene since the 60’s. This album sees him pay homage to the influence jazz greats of the past have had in crafting his sound and career by taking releases from his back catalogue recordings with a New Orleans style vibe.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Yes’

‘Souled Out’

‘Magpie Stomp’

‘Climaz Rag’

A Track From My Favourite Eastside Radio Album Of The Year!

This year has seen Eastide Radio begin it’s Album of the Week, and we’ve had a few crackers including releases from Lanie Lane, Peter Knight, Lee McAllistair and Joe Chindamo to name but a few. However my personal favourite was from a local Sydney band called Takadimi, who only recently formed after graduating together from university. Their sound was so fresh and exciting, blending jazz with folk, gypsy and Irish element. Their debut album is called New Common Sense and my favourite track is ‘Into The Night’ which I played on today’s show.

Tamikrest – Toumastin

Quite a few Malian artists have featured on The New Thing this year, and Tamikrest continue the trend. Their style is that of Toureg Blues, and Toumastin is their second album which sees them add hints of funk and reggae to their sound.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Tidit’

‘Tarhamanine Assinegh’

‘Ayitma Madjam’

‘Nak Amadjar Nidounia’

Independent Track Of The Week

‘Next’ by Alta. The Tasmanian band are bringing back Trip Hop.

Robert Rich – Medicine Box

Would you believe that Robert Rich has released over 30 albums! The American produces the easiest to listen to lush beautiful ambient sounds that could wash away even the most stubborn of stresses.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Helios’

‘Alba’

Be sure to tune in every Monday from 9.00 til 10.30am for your weekly dose of fresh new music!

For now have a great New Year!
