THE ONLY UPPER HOUSE FORUM FOR THE NSW ELECTION

THE FINAL POLITICAL FORUM for 89.7FM Eastside Radio …. and fittingly a very important one will be held during Wednesday Drive from 4:30-5:30pm, with Eric Gyors.

This forum is important by virtue of the fact that very little attention has been paid to the Upper House candidates for the NSW State Election this Saturday.

Many people may not realise that all new legislation and legislative changes have to pass through the Upper House before they can take effect. Therefore the way that it is comprised is extremely important and will have a major impact on what happens in NSW over the next four years.

With Liberal control it is highly likely that the projected incoming coalition government will have unfettered control over all legislative changes. If Labor control the Upper House it can be reasonably assumed that they will block all legislation and make NSW ungovernable. However, if there is what is termed “a strong cross-bench” (a mix of minor parties and independents so that neither of the major parties has full control) all legislation will need to be debated and scrutinised before it is either accepted or rejected.

LIVE IN THE STUDIO will be representatives of the major groups that are likely to have input into how NSW will be governed for the next four years. Participants in the hour long debate will include:

Current Upper House Members

ALP – Penny Sharpe (Parliamentary Secretary and Assisting the Minister for

Transport, the Minister for Roads and the Premier on Social Inclusion)

Liberal – Greg Pearce (Shadow Housing Minister)

Greens – David Shoebridge MLC

AND making a return bid, former MLCs, based on their strong previous track record

Australian Democrats – Arthur Chesterfield-Evans – instigator of important parliamentary enquiries into  DoCs, Mental Health, Dental Health and more

Independent – John Hatton – Well noted and highly respected Anti-Corruption fighter

Both Chesterfield-Evans and Hatton are calling for more accountability and transparency in government.

It is highly likely that the last seat or two seats will go to non major party candidates, therefore in particular previous members with a strong track record stand a good chance of getting re-elected.
