The Power of Sound and Stories

Hello Eastsiders,

It’s wonderful to be back at the station filling in for the lovely Sylvia Rosenblum. I’ve found some very intriguing characters to share with you today with a focus on stories and sound.

STORIES…

Firstly we’ll be joined by Rich Welch, Co-Director of ANTENNA DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL | 14 – 19 OCT 2014

From hard core internet addiction, to an Iranian claymation love story, to the end of the in world as we know it, the Festival is getting set for a red hot line-up of thought provoking, game changing yarns you couldn’t dream up if you tried.

This is the fourth year the Festival brings Sydneysiders a jammed pack program of adventure, human spirit, compassion and bizarre tales to delight, provoke, and dare you to know more about the world around you and all that live within.

SOUND…

JULIAN DAY

Is sound apolitical or political? The very talented Julian Day will be discussing the artistic merits of sound with Eastside…

Julian Day is an artist, composer, writer and broadcaster.

He creates simple yet evocative works encompassing installation, video, sound, text and performance. Much of his work is site-specific and collaborative, using dispersed homogeneous sound to explore the acoustic, architectural and relational properties of such varied spaces as railway sheds, marketplaces, laneways, parks and galleries.

Day is also a writer and broadcaster. He has presented programs for BBC Radio 3 and regularly hosts New Music Up Late on ABC Classic FM. His interviewees include Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Blixa Bargeld, John Cale, Laurie Anderson, David Toop and Elliott Carter.

Then we’ll be discovering the power of sound through radio from Ralph Van Dijk, who is so passionate about the medium – he stitched his eyes together for a day!

RALPH VAN DIJK

Founding Creative Director

In 1988 while working for a small advertising agency, Ralph wrote his first ever radio commercial. It went on to win a coveted Clio Award.

He got the hint and has been specialising in radio ever since.

In 1990, he co-founded Eardrum’s office in London, and after 22 years Eardrum has grown to be the world’s most awarded radio specialist agency.

Ralph is asked to lecture and run radio creative workshops around the world. He is also a regular judge at the world’s leading advertising award shows including Cannes, London International and D&AD.

One day his mother will know what he does for a living.
