The Shaolin Afronauts – Quest Under Capricorn

Eastside Radio’s Album for Christmas is Quest Under Capricorn by The Shaolin Afronauts.

A year after their stunning debut album Flight of the Ancients, Adelaide super collective The Shaolin Afronauts have returned with their new album Quest Under Capricorn. And blissfully the group have continued where they left off.

Inspired by the sounds of 70’s West Africa and avant garde jazz, Quest Under Capricorn continues the Shaolin Afronauts encouragable and addictive take on Afro, Jazz and Funk. The band, influenced heavily by the likes of Sun Ra, Fela Kuti and John Coltrane, produce killer guitar riffs, dancing horns, and thoughtful percussion on the LP.  With the sounds all combining and intertwining the result is a flowing finesse of chilled grooves and upbeat moves, with an undeniably soulful and spiritual feel throughout. The band both lull you away with classic smooth jazz escapades with mesmerising woodwind sections, yet also get you on your feet with big colourful crashing dance kicks.

The Shaolin Afronauts straddle their genres with the utmost subtlety and precision, giving the whole album a clean cut and tight appeal that at the same time crafts out their own very unique sound. They’re truly a band to get very excited about, one to be checked out in the flesh if you ever have the chance.

Quest Under Capricorn is a release by Freestyle Records. For more information go to shaolinafronauts.com
