The Showdown, 2.7.12

John had politics on the brain, and at 1 o’clock developed the ‘Showdown Asylum Seeker Policy’, a portion of which we have posted below. Julian meanwhile concentrated on music, playing some things from his collection which had been somewhat neglected, including part one of The Residents ‘best of’ collection, entitled ‘Heaven?’. ‘Hell!’ next week…

…and here is John’s policy. If you are sensitive to these issues you probably should stop reading now!

———-

(Julian didn’t know about this before I started talking about it, but seems happy to go along with it, for now)

In the spirit of ‘give us your huddled masses’, Australia should welcome all and sundry that are coming here, in boats or otherwise. We should ensure there is infrastructure ready for people of uncertain origin, as they did on Manhattan with their numbered and lettered streets.

As for the ‘leaky boats’ and ‘people smuggler’ issue, Australia should call on all that have safe vessels, and Dunkirk style, go and pick them up and monitor the crossing from our fancy patrol boats and planes.

All asylum seekers should be greeted in Darwin with a hug and an immigration official who says ‘G’day mate, welcome to Australia’.

The only problem seems to be jobs, giving them something to do once they’re here. Also, who pays? But I reckon you could get some good UN grants with such a policy.

We ought to stop being so precious, and negative about these people. How bad could they be? They’ve demonstrated enough pluck and initiative to get this far. We already have a lot of people here from elsewhere, it’ll only make the place more interesting.
