Mark Ginsburg will be bringing his South African Project to Foundry 616, and is coming in to tell our own PJ all about it on Dial Afrika this Wednesday.

Mark Ginsburg’s recent participation at a the Grahamstown Jazz Festival in South Africa gave rise to this project which will feature the music of some of the most prolific jazz artists from South Africa.

“Our mission with the South African Project is to bring the essence of this music to Australian listeners, so they can get a sense of what it is about”, Mark explains. His enthusiasm for the music born of his own country has led him to create an event for Sydneysiders to have the chance experience it for themselves.

Joining Mark for the show will be singer Judy Campbell, who has a similarly strong relationship with African music, having collaborated with Mark and others including master percussionist Bandika Ngao on the Kenyan-influenced “Mosaic” project.

Ginsburg emerged as a saxophonist of note in Cape Town where he frequently performed at popular jazz venues as well as shows, television programs and on tours. Having gained a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance, and more recently a Master’s of Music from Sydney Conservatorium, he has made Sydney his home. However, the ties with his homeland remain strong.

In addition to playing with Global Express, a collaboration of great musicians from Cape Town and Canada, Mark also played in a quintet of South African musicians playing ‘South African Jazz Standards’. “It was a real honour to be part of this and also to once again feel that strong connection with the heartbeat of South Africa. I hope to bring some of that heartbeat to the Foundry 616.”
