Force Majeure: The Last Season

Force Majeure brings a new dance work, The Last Season to Carriageworks as part of the Sydney Festival. Arts Monday chats to dramaturg, Tom Wright about his extensive career and the art of collaboration.

This intergenerational conversation stars Pamela Rabe, Paul Capsis and the powerhouse Irish actor Olwen Fouéré, as well as a troupe of 9-14 year olds. The work starts with Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons as a jumping off point, with each season portrayed by an actor and spring represented by the young  dancers. It is a cautionary tale about ageing, environmental destruction and human survival.

The season runs 6-10 January. Find out more and book tickets here.

Twenty Twenty Six Gallery is a recent addition to the cultural scene at Bondi Beach. Gallery founder and internationally acclaimed artist, Martine Emdur talks to Anthony about opening this fine art gallery in what was formerly a kosher butcher, and her journey to discovering painting on a north Queensland island. Martine’s large scale works of sublime underwater worlds are on display and complement the current exhibition entitled  Identitetskris featuring artist Melissa Mladin Löwgren. Also large scale works, Melissa works in mixed media on canvas, they are abstract, expressive and immersive: you are drawn into the work. She uses colour to denote and symbolise an emotion or feeling. They can be likened to a psycho-drama that explores ideas of identity, the self and our environment and how it might influence our development.

Coming Out in the 70s is a new exhibition at the State Library of NSW. Co-curator, Bruce Carter describes how the exhibition reveals the rise of gay activism in Australia through the use of posters, photographs, personal papers, oral history and colourful badges.

Drawn from the State Library’s extensive archives, the exhibition documents how gay men and lesbians organised and made themselves visible, often in confronting ways. The library is also currently running a drive to acquire memorabilia and ephemera that relates to gay and lesbian issues and the struggle for recognition.

This free exhibition runs until 16 May 2021. You can also view the online version here.
