The Three Seas, the cross-cultural ensemble, is starting an Australian tour on March 17 till April 15 and are playing 15 shows in a variety of venues from concert halls to intimate clubs.

Their first show will take place at the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music in Wollongong. They will perform at Riverside Theatres in Parramatta on March 19 and at Lazybones Lounge Restaurant and Bar in Sydney on April 14.

The group is led by composer and saxophonist Matt Keegan and Baul singer Raju Das. The other performers are Deo Ashish Mothey, Darjeeling-born singer and multi-instrumentalist; and drummer Gaurab Chatterjee from Kolkata, India.

Their concerts are always a unique experience and will make the audience get out of their seat and dance.

Over the 14-year period, the group has released three albums and toured substantially throughout Asia, Australia and the UK.

They recorded their fourth studio album “Vimana” last year at the renowned Real World Studios in the UK. Their 11-track project will be released soon and includes original compositions and arrangements of Baulgan, Buddhist chants and a Bollywood classic.

Their music fuses modern Australian jazz from Sydney and Kolkata with West Bengal and Himalayan folk music. Songlines magazine described them as the “Bermuda Triangle of electro-dub, funk and Hindustani music.”

Spiritual jazz, rock, dub reggae and traditional North Indian instruments (the khamak, dupki, estraj and dotora) are all combined with a tribal rhythm and intricate bass lines.

Prime minister Anthony Albanese, during his visit to India on March 9 touched on the Indian/Australian “super group” as part of his mission to increase the cultural exchange between both nations.

Tracey Korsten, Oz Asia Festival, said The Three Seas is a “musical marriage that sent the room into ecstasy.”

The 15-show tour will conclude on April 15 at Nexus Arts Venue on April 15.
