Touring Australia’s Past

Curators Richard White and Rose Cullen in the exhibition

Curators Richard White and Rose Cullen in the exhibition

Prof Richard White and Rose Cullen speak to Maisy Stapleton about the exhibition they curated for the Macleay Museum at Sydney University.

Touring the Past: tourism and history in Australia opened recently and will run until February 2014. The exhibition tells of Australia’s growing interest in its own past – in convicts, bushrangers and tales behind icons such as the dog on the tuckerbox. It recounts how Australian artists depicted the past with great nostalgia and the genesis of Aboriginal souvenirs. The exhibition also shows how ‘back to …’ days swelled an interest in history and how Aboriginal people are travelling back to their country to make connections with their past and their (often lost) territory.

Listen to a three part interview with the Curators broadcast on 29th August on Arts Thursday with Maisy Stapleton
