Vaucluse House Museum Centenary

2015 marks 100 years of the treasured, iconic Vaucluse House as a public museum.  Sydney Living Museums is celebrating this milestone with a jam-packed day of free activities for all to enjoy on  Sunday 11 October.

Step back in time and explore the lifestyle that William Charles Wentworth, his wife Sarah and their ten children enjoyed in this picturesque, stately 19th century mansion with its magnificent formal rooms, ornate interiors and stunning surrounding estate grounds.

Visitors can experience a working colonial kitchen with preserving and bottling demonstrations and tastings from historical recipes of the day: mulled spiced cider with pickled nasturtium pods, white and rye bread, pickled fennel with cheese, lemon barley water and lemon cheese.

The rooms will come alive with musical recitals including a first ever performance at Vaucluse House of The City of Sydney Polka – a piece written for Charles Wentworth, demonstrations of traditional needlework techniques and a display of never seen before treasures from Wentworth’s personal collection.

Outside garden activities include estate tours, seed planting with the specialist horticulturalists, pony rides on the carriage loop, vintage inspired children’s games: quoits, skittles and croquet and a unique, imaginative insight in to Indigenous whale tales through the ‘Whales and Damper’ talks delivered on the beach nearby.

Sunday 11 October also marks the launch of Sydney Living Museums public refurbishment fund raising initiative and new membership program which plays a vital role in preserving Vaucluse House including the restoration of the magnificent Drawing Room one of the finest surviving examples of colonial interiors in Australia.
