No I Will Not Get The Mail (I’m A Rock Star…Don’t You Know?!)
My name is Poppy Lynch and I am on a work experience week here at the radio’s Paddington home learning about being part of a business, working in the music industry, and the many skills required for a management, secretarial, or presenting roles in music radio.
I love anything to do with music, drama and dance and I look forward to pursuing something in the arts after the completion of my HSC, because the feeling you get when finding a new band, uplifting song or a new exciting way of producing and sharing music is amazing. My passion for music strands from my music school which is like a second home to me and all the other young students that go there. I have learnt to play the drums and piano since the age of 7. The school has been nicknamed the ‘Kings Cross Conservatory’, where the indie/pop rock jams flow onto the streets of Potts Point.

Stephanie Bourke, the principle of the school and the founder of the ‘Rock and Roll High School’ in Melbourne is flooded with students attending their drum, bass guitar, electric guitar, piano and vocal lessons in the hours after school and then on the weekends groups of us rehearse together as bands, creating new music and taking on some old classics. A few bands recently got together to record some of our original songs for a CD, ‘Tales from the Eastern Suburbs’ and we were then able to perform at the Basement, a renowned musical hub of Sydney.
This opportunity changed our lives and the way we look at music of today. The technology and the work that goes into production in the music industry is outstanding and so rewarding (not greatly in a financial way however!). Now that I have been given yet another opportunity to work inside the world of music, here at Eastside, I have realized that the greatest thing is the joy that any form of music or composition brings to a listener or creator’s mind.
Eastside Radio is a station that broadens the Australian public’s knowledge of good music and this inspires young people to not only look at the Justin Bieber’s that are so commonly found in the spotlight today, but to go into more depth with jazz, folk, blues and country where the technique and creativity of music is explored. I hope that others like me get to experience the beauty of music whether it’s punk rock or jazz so that music’s future is a bright one.
