Young Explorers + Seasoned Legends
To celebrate the old and the new with Jazz in Sydney, Eastside Radio will be holding a Young Explorers + Seasoned Legends jazz night that will feature some local jazz legends and newbies breaking into the Sydney jazz scene.
Serious lovers of jazz will remember the great players Ed Wilson, Col Loughnan and Bill Burton who will be bring their trombone, sax and trumpet skills to a magical night of old and new jazz.
Sydney is a wonderful arena for up and coming jazz musicians, and Eastside have four of the best jazz musicians in Sydney to feature as our Young Explorers. Luke Stephens, Josh Meader, Michael Avgenicos and Frank Dacent are set to bring some smooth rhythms to the night of jazz that will excite even the oldest of jazz minds.
Some of us will remember Ed Wilson from the legendary Daly/Wilson Big Band who enjoyed fame during the seventies and early eighties. Ed is not only famous for his smooth trombone skills but also for his skills as a composer.
With an impressive 45 years in the jazz industry, our second Seasoned Legend is Col Loughnan who is known as one of Australia’s most experienced saxophone players. Famous as a teacher and as an arranger, Col enjoyed a career in bands and as a studio musician, even joining Ed in Daly/Wilson Big Band as their sax player from 1969-1972.
Our final legend will be 4 time “Mo Award” winner Bill Burton who will bring his extensive career as a trumpeter to our evening of jazz. Bill was hugely influential as a musician in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s and was the Resident Band Leader for the legendary club Chequers and the Chevron Silver Spade.
Our Young Explorer’s are set to shape the night and give us a taste of what Sydney is to expect from future jazz players.
Luke Stephens was first given an instrument at the age of 7. Now 22, Luke has graced stages all over Europe and Australia showcasing his incredible trumpeting talents that have been shaped by some of Australia’s best jazz teachers. Currently a member of multiple bands and having played at international jazz festivals, Luke is set to light the stage on fire with his incredible jazz talents.
Josh Meader has been surrounded by the Arts from a very young age. His artist parents introduced him to the guitar at age 7 and was taught by his professional musician father Paul. At the age of 8, he performed his first live gig and since then has performed hundreds of gigs with his family at a semi-professional level. Check out Josh with his Dad performing in Sydney.

Frank labels himself as a freelance trombonist and is studying at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. He joins a stella cast of musicians for a night of luscious jazz from both the old and the new.
